Quantum light by atomic arrays in optical resonators
Light scattering by a periodic atomic array is studied when the atoms couple
with the mode of a high-finesse optical resonator and are driven by a laser.
When the von-Laue condition is not satified, there is no coherent emission into
the cavity mode, and the latter is pumped via inelastic scattering processes.
We consider this situation and identify conditions for which different
non-linear optical processes can occur. We show that these processes can be
controlled by suitably tuning the strength of laser and cavity coupling, the
angle between laser and cavity axis, and the array periodicity. We characterize
the coherence properties of the light when the system can either operate as
degenerate parametric amplifier or as a source of antibunched-light. Our study
permits us to identify the individual multi-photon components of the nonlinear
optical response of the atomic array and the corresponding parameter regimes,
thereby in principle allowing one for controlling the nonlinear optical
response of the medium.Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, version to appear in Phys. Rev.
Signatures of non-locality in the first-order coherence of the scattered light
The spatial coherence of an atomic wavepacket can be detected in the
scattered photons, even when the center-of-mass motion is in the quantum
coherent superposition of two distant, non-overlapping wave packets. Spatial
coherence manifests itself in the power spectrum of the emitted photons, whose
spectral components can exhibit interference fringes as a function of the
emission angle. The contrast and the phase of this interference pattern provide
information about the quantum state of the center of mass of the scattering
atom.Comment: 5 pages, one figure, submitted to Laser Physics, special issue in

Doppler cooling of a Coulomb crystal
We study theoretically Doppler laser-cooling of a cluster of 2-level atoms
confined in a linear ion trap. Using several consecutive steps of averaging we
derive, from the full quantum mechanical master equation, an equation for the
total mechanical energy of the one dimensional crystal, defined on a
coarse-grained energy scale whose grid size is smaller than the linewidth of
the electronic transition. This equation describes the cooling dynamics for an
arbitrary number of ions and in the quantum regime. We discuss the validity of
the ergodic assumption (i.e. that the phase space distribution is only a
function of energy). From our equation we derive the semiclassical limit (i.e.
when the mechanical motion can be treated classically) and the Lamb-Dicke limit
(i.e. when the size of the mechanical wave function is much smaller than the
laser wavelength). We find a Fokker-Planck equation for the total mechanical
energy of the system, whose solution is in agreement with previous analytical
calculations which were based on different assumptions and valid only in their
specific regimes. Finally, in the classical limit we derive an analytic
expression for the average coupling, by light scattering, between motional
states at different energies.Comment: 19 pages, 3 figure
Laser Cooling of two trapped ions: Sideband cooling beyond the Lamb-Dicke limit
We study laser cooling of two ions that are trapped in a harmonic potential
and interact by Coulomb repulsion. Sideband cooling in the Lamb-Dicke regime is
shown to work analogously to sideband cooling of a single ion. Outside the
Lamb-Dicke regime, the incommensurable frequencies of the two vibrational modes
result in a quasi-continuous energy spectrum that significantly alters the
cooling dynamics. The cooling time decreases nonlinearly with the linewidth of
the cooling transition, and the effect of trapping states which may slow down
the cooling is considerably reduced. We show that cooling to the ground state
is possible also outside the Lamb-Dicke regime. We develop the model and use
Quantum Monte Carlo calculations for specific examples. We show that a rate
equation treatment is a good approximation in all cases.Comment: 13 pages, 10 figure
Casimir forces and non-Newtonian gravitation
The search for non-relativistic deviations from Newtonian gravitation can
lead to new phenomena signalling the unification of gravity with the other
fundamental interactions. Various recent theoretical frameworks indicate a
possible window for non-Newtonian forces with gravitational coupling strength
in the micrometre range. The major expected background in the same range is
attributable to the Casimir force or variants of it if dielectric materials,
rather than conducting ones, are considered. Here we review the measurements of
the Casimir force performed so far in the micrometre range and how they
determine constraints on non-Newtonian gravitation, also discussing the
dominant sources of false signals. We also propose a geometry-independent
parameterization of all data in terms of the measurement of the constant c. Any
Casimir force measurement should lead, once all corrections are taken into
account, to a determination of the constant c which, in order to assess the
accuracy of the measurement, can be compared with its more precise value known
through microscopic measurements. Although the last decade of experiments has
resulted in solid demonstrations of the Casimir force, the situation is not
conclusive with respect to being able to discover new physics. Future
experiments and novel phenomenological analysis will be necessary to discover
non-Newtonian forces or to push the window for their possible existence into
regions of the parameter space which theoretically appear unnatural.Comment: Also available at http://www.iop.org/EJ/abstract/1367-2630/8/10/23
